About Our Engineered Oak Flooring
All with plywood underside for better stability and strength for your floor after installation. We use a minimum of 4mm thickness European oak wear layer for long life and better durability. 4mm wear layer lasts 33% longer than 3mm. When choosing and comparing engineered oak flooring, always make sure that the wear layer of oak is sufficiently thick to cope with the amount of wear and tear your floor will receive. Some companies supply engineered products with an oak wear layer as thin as 2mm, which will soon need to be replaced. The minimum thickness of oak wear layer on our engineered oak is 4mm, thus providing excellent durability. Our 21mm engineered oak has a full 6mm oak wear layer. This provides virtually as much durability as an 18mm thick solid oak but with all the stability advantages engineered oak provides.
How our Oak Flooring is made
Our engineered oak flooring is made by pressure bonding this oak layer to a plywood base or underside. It looks exactly like solid oak when installed, but due to the layer of plywood has increased stability. It can be designed and produced in wider sizes whilst minimising the risk of dimensional movement. Due to this extra stability that engineered oak flooring provides it tends to behave itself better than solid oak in areas prone to varying levels of humidity, such as cellars, kitchens and bathrooms. It will also handle the drier areas better too. However, we advise the use of a Thermo-Hygrometer to monitor its surrounding conditions at all times.
Some believe that it is not possible to sand scratches and dents out of engineered wood. However that is only true if the wear layer is less than 3mm thick. Whereas the thinnest wear layer we provide is 4mm, ensuring excellent durability. Plywood backed engineered oak boards can be installed in various ways. They can be nailed down, glued down, or it can be installed as a floating floor by simply gluing the boards together with a suitable Joint Adhesive.
Unfinished Engineered Oak Flooring
Like its solid oak cousin, engineered oak boards can be supplied either unfinished or pre-finished. Unfinished engineered oak flooring is plain oak that is sanded but not covered with anything. Unfinished oak flooring tends to cost a little less than pre-finished oak because it goes through fewer processes to be produced. However, it does require a light sanding by hand after installation before being treated with the owners choice of finish.
Unfinished oak flooring should always be sealed like this immediately after installation. After finishing you will need to wait for the finish/sealant to dry, and sometimes additional coats may be required. With unfinished oak, the main advantage is that you can colour and seal it to your exact specification. This allows you to match it up with any colour.
Pre-finished Engineered Oak Flooring
Pre-finished oak floors are sanded and covered with an oil or lacquer within the factory it was produced. Unlike its unfinished counterpart you can walk on it almost immediately after installation without any extra work.
Both of these finishes are perfectly suitable to your home; it just depends what needs you have. If you have a specific look in mind then going for unfinished solid oak flooring may well be your best bet. Otherwise pre-finished will still create a beautiful look for your home and will cut out the leg work.
Brushed and Natural Oiled
Brushed and Natural Oiled oak is our most popular finish by far offering a beautifully enhanced and natural looking grain. Our Brushed and Natural Oiled oak is coated with natural colour waxoil that does not change the colour of the floor.
The Brushed and Natural Oiled finish is achieved by ‘brushing’ the face of the planks during manufacture. This removes the slightly softer fibres of the oak. After oiling this enhances the beautiful grain features of natural oak and provides a slightly textured surface.
Scratches and marks don’t show up as much as on a smooth finish. Also because the waxoil colour is natural and if you want to darken the colour you can apply another coat of waxoil. This can be done in whatever colour you choose to achieve the exact finish that you want.
This finish is simple to maintain and should only ever require a light sanding and another coat of waxoil to bring it back keep in great condition. It should never require a total re-finish, which increases its lifespan and reduces maintenance costs.
For the ultimate in durability, ask about our 100% Birch plywood backed Brushed and Natural Oiled engineered floor.
Double Brushed and Dark Oiled Oak Flooring
The deep textured finish is created by double brushing the face of the oak plank during manufacture. After this we apply several coats of a dark waxoil. This enhances the grain features, thus creating a somewhat antique appearance that is truly beautiful.
Very popular in conversions and restorations because of its appearance when installed in rooms with other wood features. It is installed in bars or restaurants where the floor will be subjected to high traffic. It doesn’t show up marks and scratches like a smooth finish does.
Very simple to maintain and should never require a total re-sanding of the whole area for re-finishing. Just sand the worn areas by hand and apply another coat or two of waxoil. This will bring the floor back to life and looking as good as new.
This is a brushed & oiled surface, so oak being oak, there will be a variance in the depth of texture, depending on the grain of each board. Some boards may be quite smooth with not much texture but others may be quite rough. This happens where more of the softer fibres of the face have been brushed out, sometimes causing a slightly spiky feel. This is not a fault with the board and can be fixed. This is done by lightly sanding the area concerned and re-coating with waxoil, or simply avoided through selection of the boards during installation.
Lacquered Oak Flooring
The finish on our engineered oak lacquered flooring is achieved by applying seven coats of UV lacquer. This is applied over a primer onto a sanded oak board. An anti-scratch protection coat is then applied to make the wood more durable. This results in flooring that is relatively smooth and hard, with a shiny satin finish. It is also easy to clean, making it a great choice for those who suffer from allergies.
Engineered oak lacquered flooring is a popular choice as it perfectly complements many different styles of room and decors. It works very well in rooms with low natural light, as the shiny finish can brighten up the room through reflection.
Hand Scraped Oak Flooring
This finish mirrors traditional wood working techniques. Each oak plank is hand scraped before being coloured either with waxoil or a lacquered stain. This gives a slightly enhanced and darker grain. We are confident you will agree that Hand Scraped oak looks absolutely stunning.
Hand scraped flooring adds a texture to any environment. It echos the ancient methods used for levelling and flattening an oak floor in years gone by. This finish adds to the depth, warmth and unique character of your finished floor. The grain being slightly textured and darker to enhaning the natural oak beauty.
Celtic Character Rustic Oak Flooring
The unique Celtic Character Rustic finish is created by allowing all grades of oak into the finished production line. We then fill all the open natural irregularities with a very dark putty before sanding and oiling. This is done to highlight and enhance features such as knots and splits in the wood. It creates a rustic appearance which is truly stunning when viewed on the completed floor.
Celtic Character Rustic oak is a sanded and oiled finish, intended to grow in character as the floor is used. Any marks and scratches simply adding to the character effect. This makes it a perfect choice for rooms that see high volumes of traffic such as living rooms and even children’s playrooms.
If you ever want to make any repairs, it is a simple process of sanding the affected area by hand and re-oiling.
One of the beauties of a finished oak floor is that no two boards are the same. We have chosen to make this a feature of the floor and make these characteristics stand out with pride. It is our most work intensive finish but we believe the effort is well worth it.
When a small sample is sometimes considered, with a big black streak running through it, it is very difficult to imagine your whole floor containing such features but it works! It looks amazing, so please make sure you study the photos of Celtic Character Rustic flooring installed.
Celtic Character Rustic floor finish is also plywood backed, and so is ideal for use over underfloor heating. The 15mm-thick option being designed specifically for providing excellent stability in this situation.
